Welcome Message

The Hong Kong Institution of Physicists in Medicine (HKIPM) is formed with the responsibility to promote the advancement of medical physics practice for the purpose of providing the highest quality medical services in patient care.

We encourage the study and advancement of physics practice in medicine in Hong Kong, develop and maintain the good practice of physics in medicine by ensuring the highest professional standards of competence and ethical integrity, promote scientific and professional exchange, and harmonize the partnership between medical physicists and medical and allied health professionals in the provision and continuing improvement of patient care.

Apart from working with our members, we form partnerships with professional organizations and industrial companies to achieve these goals and objectives.

Mutual Recognition of HKIPM and KMPCB Certification Boards on Professional Certification of Medical Physicists in Hong Kong and Korea

The Hong Kong Institution of Physicists in Medicine Certification Board (HKIPMCB) and the Korean Medical Physics Certification Board (KMPCB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a scheme of mutual recognition on professional certification granted by these Boards to medical physicists practicing in the specialty of Radiation Oncology Physics in Hong Kong and Korea. The MOU is effective from 1 January 2020 for a period of 5 years and this can be extended.

HKIPMCB and KMPCB are both accredited by the International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) in 2015. The two boards mutually recognize that the standard and process adopted in their certification systems are equivalent and are in compliance with the requirements specified by IMPCB in accordance with IOMP guidelines on professional certification of medical physicists.

The signing of the MOU marks a new era of collaboration amongst the medical physicists practicing in Korea and Hong Kong. The implementation of the mutual recognition scheme will help promoting social and scientific exchanges between the medical physics communities in Korea and Hong Kong. This can also create more opportunities and a wider boundary for professional and career developments of the medical physicists in these regions.

Currently, the mutual recognition scheme covers only the specialty of Radiation Oncology Physics. The scheme can be extended in the future to cover other specialties of medical physics.

Accreditation of HKIPM Certification Board by IMPCB

The HKIPM Medical Physics Certification Board has been validated and awarded the Accreditation Certificate by the International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB).  This signifies that the standard and process used by the HKIPM Board is in full compliance with the international standards as specified by IOMP and IMPCB. The accreditation verifies that standard of practice of HKIPM Board certified medical physicists is up to international standard.

Who are Medical Physicists?

Medical physicists practicing in hospitals are healthcare professionals involved with the application of medical physics principles and techniques in the clinics for prevention, treatment and diagnosis of human disorders, illnesses and disabilities. Medical Physicists are subject to professional certification. Certified medical physicists are competent to practice independently in one or more of the subfields of medical physics, which include Radiation Oncology Physics, Medical Imaging Physics and Health Physics (Radiation Protection in Medicine). There are more than 18,000 medical physicists practicing in different parts of the world with about 100 in Hong Kong.

HKIPM Position Statement on the Use of Patient Shielding During Diagnostic X-ray Examination

The HKIPM has issued a Position Statement on use of radiation shields directly on patients during X-ray examination procedures. The Institution agrees in principle with the recommendations made by American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and British Institute of Radiology (BIR) that radiation shields should not be routinely used in diagnostic radiology. However, implementation of the recommendations will make a major change in practice in diagnostic radiology and this may not be accepted by the patients and their relatives, regulators and healthcare practitioners. The Institution considers that smooth implementation of the change requires the endorsement of the state holders and a general consensus on an implementation strategy. This in turn would require the launching of an appropriate consultation and educational and program to help the stake holders to better understand and communicate on the recommended changes. The Position Statement is specifically issued to draw attention of medical physicists on the AAPM and BIR recommendations and to encourage them to prepare and contribute to educating the state holders on reasons and principles behind these recommendations.

Statement on Registration of Allied Health Professionals - Medical Physicist Aspect

The quality of practice of the medical physicists has direct impact on the outcome of the clinical procedures using radiation and this can affect a large number of patients. To protect the interest and wellbeing of the patients, the qualification and scope and standard of practice of medical physicists in Hong Kong should be put under statutory registration as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP).
